Trump Confirms Push for Immediate Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia
President Donald J. Trump announced he held a “very good” call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia and discussed the ongoing conflict with Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister. According to Trump, both parties have agreed to immediately meet and work toward an “immediate ceasefire and peace” following days of heavy fighting along the contested border.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. will not resume trade negotiations until hostilities end, stating, “It is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting stops.” He expressed optimism that both nations, with their “long and storied history and culture,” will reach a peaceful resolution soon.
The announcement comes amid the most intense military escalation between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade, involving artillery strikes, drone operations, and airpower deployments. At least 16 fatalities and mass civilian displacements have been reported since the conflict erupted.
Trump concluded his statement by noting that once peace is achieved, the U.S. looks forward to concluding new trade agreements with both countries. This diplomatic intervention marks Washington’s strongest involvement in efforts to de-escalate the Southeast Asian border crisis so far.
