Lebanon Approves New Minimum Wage: LBP 28 Million Monthly

🇱🇧 The Lebanese government has approved a decree raising the minimum monthly wage to 28 million Lebanese pounds, aiming to address the deepening economic collapse and the erosion of citizens’ purchasing power. However, the decision has sparked major controversy.

Bechara Asmar, head of the General Labor Union, expressed strong opposition, calling the measure “incomplete and unfair”, arguing that it fails to meet the scale of the ongoing crisis and creates inequality within public institutions. He warned of possible protests and even a legal appeal to the State Shura Council.

Asmar revealed he met with Labor Minister Mohammad Haidar, who promised a review of the decree before year’s end. Discussions with economic bodies are ongoing, especially if political and economic stability improves. For now, union escalations are paused.

The timing of enforcement remains unclear, pending final adjustments. Many criticize the government for ignoring demands for comprehensive labor reform, noting the wage hike could disrupt the ranking structure in public institutions.

This move comes amid soaring inflation, currency depreciation, and worsening living conditions across Lebanon, placing further pressure on both the state and private sectors.
